Oh, Canada

Olympic aspirations up north

In addition to making for some quality midterm procrastination time the past few weeks, the Olympics have also allowed Columbians to get a glimpse of what Canada is actually like after all. A native Canadian analyzes the good, the awkward, and the just awkward from the past three weeks.

Sidney Crosby
Good: He’s the new golden boy. The Canadian sensation scored in overtime in the men’s hockey finals, underlining Canada’s 14 gold medals. This was especially embarrassing for the USA, the go-to nation for Olympic success.
Awkward: He plays for Pittsburgh in the NHL.

The ceremonies
Good: K.D. Lang’s heart-wrenching performance of Hallelujah touched the hearts of every Canadian: a Canadian singer doing a rendition from a Canadian songwriter (Leonard Cohen), sung in Canada.
Awkward: Figure skating Mounties. And they are supposed to be taken as seriously as police are. Oh, and that the opening ceremonies followed Beijing’s.

The Sochi Olympic ad
Awkward: Figure skaters snowboarding in space?!
