highlights from our thanksgiving breaks

1. Going to a bar: I forget what it was called—and it was in New Jersey—but it had a nice mix of hipster and bro, with just the right amounts of Blue Moon beer and sports television.
-Hannah Yudkin, art editor

2. Black Friday: It’s one of those days when I’m proud to call myself a denizen of the Jersey of New. I now possess a spiffy red winter coat, two more pairs of boots, skinny black-and-white plaid pants, a jumpsuit that I’m positive was made to fit me... and that’s just the tip of the cornucopia.
-Yin Yin Lu, books editor

3. The Pixies: The best moment of my break was seeing the Pixies perform at Hammerstein Ballroom—a lifetime dream. My worst moment was traveling to the boonies of Red Hook, Brooklyn, to a supposedly great taqueria, to find a hand-written “Closed” sign, and then having to endure the two-transfer subway ride back on an empty stomach.
-Devin Briski, food and drink editor

4. The Thanksgiving Day Parade:v This year the Thanksgiving Day Parade went along Seventh Avenue instead of Broadway so I could see the balloons from my apartment!
-Catherine Rice, dance editor

5. Leftovers: They fill my fridge, and later, my stomach. What could be better?
–Raphael Pope-Sussman, deputy editor, features

6. Apple pie “baked in a bag”: I discovered that, far from resulting in some flambé disaster, this is actually the most delicious innovation of the last century.
-Melanie Jones, managing editor, features

7. Catching up on Google Reader: I didn’t read through all of the items in my 183 subscriptions, but I made a good dent in at least 100 of them.
–Haley Vecchiarelli, senior design editor

8. “New Moon”: Both the best and worst moment of my Thanksgiving break—a very guilty pleasure.
-Helen Werbe, style editor

9. Sweet potatoes: The best part of Thanksgiving was this sweet potato in an orange rind with marshmallows and a maraschino cherry on top thing that my aunt makes just once a year.
–Rebecca Pattiz, music editor

10. “Fantastic Mr. Fox”: The best part was sitting behind a mini-Wes Anderson, a 10-year-old who wore slacks, a tucked-in red polo shirt, and a fox tie. He wouldn’t stop talking to his dad about the inconsistencies between the book and the movie. A real auteur in the making.
-Evan Omi, eyesites editor
