At Venexiana’s Spring 2010 show, prom-ready looks were in supply. The collection featured a bevy of black and white ball gowns encrusted with sequins and lace floral appliqués in the contrasting color. The collection was feminine with a hint of toughness in the way of messy buns and overloaded black eyeliner and mascara.

Actresses Reshma Shetty and Chrishell Stause of All My Children were certainly not prepared, as they attended the show in a soft chiffon empire-waisted gown and a poufy paneled miniskirt, respectively. Well, designer Kati Stern certainly did a daring thing, opting for black, white, and sequins in a spring collection. Notable pieces included a swingy cream trapeze top with sequined lace shoulders, an exaggerated green brocade gown with a rounded skirt, and a Barbie-pink backless sparkly dress with a black patent bow at the back that provided a nice surprise in the mostly monotone collection. After the models had all cruised down the runway, Ms. Stern herself took to the catwalk, raising her fists in triumph.

Any Columbia student can achieve the Venexiana look in day or night. For day, mix it up with a rumpled bun or heavy eyeliner. At night, keep an eye out for dresses in black and white that have sequined and lace detailing or lots of beading. Show off some skin in a backless dress with a high neckline - it's subtly sexy.
