Vintage fairs offer a rare opportunity to find unique pieces at student-friendly prices. Manhattan’s Vintage Fair, coming this weekend, gives attendees a chance to browse a varied selection of clothes, shoes, bags, leather items, and more from a multitude of vintage vendors.

Among the irresistible finds are cute graphic T-shirts from the ’80s, leather purses with intricate designs and original metal work, and fabulous costume jewelry that will make any outfit pop. For more adventurous shoppers, there are always a few vendors selling vintage undergarments. Here are some tips that’ll help you enjoy the fair to the fullest:

1. The Manhattan Vintage Fair charges admission, but you can find a discount coupon on the fair's website. Keep in mind that there are great treasures to be found, and that many of the pieces are unique—the $15 entrance fee is well worth it.

2. Arrive early and get in line. You will get first looks and dibs on everything.

3. Look at all the stands before you buy anything. Even though each piece is unique, many vendors specialize in the same types of items.

4. Many of the clothing items will need to be altered to fit you well. Make sure that any piece you buy has seams that can be sewn and have a good tailor at hand. Also, make sure that all items are in good condition and clean! Stained or damaged leather, lace, or other delicate materials cannot be remedied.

5. Bring cash. Even though some vendors have credit/debit machines, the fair’s wireless network doesn’t always work properly—and some vendors will give you a discount if you pay entirely in cash.
